I have been prescribed Ambien a few times…I usually get a 30 day prescription and he tells me to try not to take them daily. Sleeping pills are very addictive so most doctors do not want their patients to stay on them, they want you to try to find another way to help yourself go to sleep. I have insomnia and have never found anything that will put me to sleep naturally. I take an Ambien with 3 3 mg of Melatonin. I have tried Lunesta they do help with going to sleep but it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth that is still there in the morning, it is a side effect of the medication that may or may not effect you. If your doctor tells only gives it to you for a few weeks then that is all he wants you to take it. You will have to talk with him if you feel you still need it.
