Telomeres are sequences (nonsense, or they do not code for anything important that is to used in life) in the end of chromosomes that are slowly degenerated each time the cell replicates. Studies have been conducted that show that these sequences are added by an enzyme called telomerase – but it only does this during the developmental stages of life (i.e. embryo). Once it has, it will deactivate. When telomere sequences are totally degenerated – important genes are slowly degenerated each time the cell divides (because telomeric sequences are no longer flanking these important genes). Once this happens, theory has it that the aging process will begin – the body cannot break down nutrients as effectively, the body cannot repair as easily (lack of functional proteins/enzymes that are being degenerated after each replication), etc. In experiments, rats with active telomerases will have longer lifespans (telemoric sequences are elongated as compared to control mice). Also, it is believed that telomerase is overly active in cancer cells – hence their immortality. This is all experimental and theory. That is one theory as to why we age. If this is true, then we can slow the aging process – theoretically we could activate telomerase in human cells and elongate life.
