Hydromorphone is a much more potent narcotic than morphine (7.5 mg tablet hydromorphone=30mg tablet of morphine=0.4mg Intravenous hydromorphone). Therefore, the dose adjustment shows that you are actually taking less of the pain killer than you used to. Also, Morphine DOES cause itching, it is a side effect many people experience. Actually, I would have recommended they started you on Benadryl before the itching happened. Also, Benardryl doses should not exceed 400mg daily, and most studies have shown you dont even need that much to stop the itching caused by morphine, so maybe you did take too much. Bendaryl is an older antihistamine, and therefore it actually works on several areas in the body, including the stomach. It does partially decrease the release of stomach acid, which may be a reason why you are having stomach problems. Headache is a sure sign of withdrawl from everything and anything, try incorporating more water to help prevent and treat that. The body aches can also be from the Benadryl, although it is not usually common, but everyone is different. Try to decrease the amount of Benadrl slowly like you had mentioned. Also, I wanted to mention that hydromorphone is a newer opioid and therefore is not associated with itching like morphine. Good Luck and I hope it all works out!
