Why does Alcohol cause hiccups?

Hiccups are commonly caused by distention of the stomach, which you get if you eat too much, drink carbonated beverages, or swallow too much air.This suggests hiccups may be more the result of fizzy mixers than alcohol itself. Or else you just slurp. Any comments?

    Hiccups come from a diaphragm in spasm, I would guess that alcohol causes the diaphragm to have loose muscle tone causing it to spasm. It probably interferes with electrical signals that would keep it from proper function.
